Cultivation & Care
Light, soil, water, climate, propagation, containers, feeding and winter protection.
7.Cultivation
| Factor | Practical guidance |
|---|---|
| Light | Part sun to part shade; bright filtered light is generally suitable. |
| Soil | Adaptable to loam, sand and clay; vigorous growth is favored by fertile, moisture-retentive but adequately drained soil. |
| Water | Regular moisture; avoid prolonged waterlogging. Established plants show moderate drought tolerance. |
| Climate | Tropical to warm subtropical; humid conditions are generally favorable. |
| Hardiness | Often described for approximately USDA zones 9B-11. |
| Salt tolerance | Poor; growth may be reduced in saline soil or irrigation water. |
8.Propagation
Rhizome division
One of the most reliable methods. A mature clump can be divided so each section retains viable rhizome tissue and one or more shoots.
Stem cuttings
Healthy stem sections can sometimes be rooted under warm, humid conditions.
Offsets
Young shoots developing near an established plant can be separated once they have adequate roots.
9.Pests and Problems
The plant is generally regarded as relatively resistant to serious disease, but problems can occur.
- Mites
- Nematodes
- Root problems associated with poor drainage or excess moisture
- Leaf and growth stress from excessive sun, drought, or salinity
