1.Executive Summary
Costus igneus, widely called the Insulin Plant, is a tropical medicinal and ornamental plant best known for traditional use in helping control blood glucose. Modern botanical databases generally classify the plant under the accepted name Chamaecostus cuspidatus, while Costus igneus remains common in horticultural, medicinal, and research literature as a synonym.
Interest in the plant has grown because laboratory and animal studies have reported glucose-lowering activity. Researchers have investigated flavonoids, phenolic compounds, steroids, terpenoids, glycosides, proteins, and other constituents that may contribute to biological activity.
One particularly interesting line of research isolated an insulin-like protein from the plant. Experimental studies reported increased glucose uptake and changes in components of insulin-signaling pathways. This does not mean the plant contains pharmaceutical insulin or that eating a leaf is equivalent to receiving insulin therapy.
Most evidence remains preclinical: in-vitro assays, cell studies, animal models, phytochemical analysis, and mechanistic experiments. Large, rigorous randomized controlled trials in humans are lacking. Published human case reports of hypoglycemia associated with Costus igneus use also support caution, particularly when it is combined with glucose-lowering medication.
